College Valley - Hill fort trail

 Park your car at the main public car park below Great Hetha and walk back into Hethpool.

Carry on past the turning for Hethpool house.  As you walk down the road the man made lake is on your left and you will shortly come to the turn for Elsdonburn and Trowupburn. Walk maybe 30 yards along this road and then head up the hill on your right. Look at the cultivation terraces as you climb uphill to the first of the way markers.

You will quickly start to get great views north out of the College Valley.

hill fort walks

and

hill fort post

These are some of the least known views in the college valley

hill fort trail;

and as you approach the plantation above Elsdonburn you come to a section of boggy ground and a stile

fort

and here you can see the results of the recent felling of the plantation above Elsdonburn

elsdon burn plantation

and another view

and finally the view into Scotland just before the trail takes you around the shoulder of Ringchesters and down to Elsdonburn. On the way back you can either retrace your steps or take a short climb up Great Hetha

into scotland
