Holloways.

We came across this term whilst researching the history of Ros Castle. They are basically medieval roads or footpaths.

Extracted from interpreting the landscape.

A distinctive feature of deserted medieval villages. Holloways mark the course of old roads and paths. Lanes frequently lead off from the main holloway.
Occassionally the roads are cambered with ditches along each side.

Platforms might lie alongside the Holloways. It was on these that the farms and cottages stood. They are large embanked areas.
