Kirknewton, Northumberland

About 8 miles out of Wooler on the Yetholm road you will come to Kirknewton. Here you will find a village hall which sometimes hosts an exhibition and an old church which is well worth visiting. It dates back to Border Reiver times and you can see the importance which they placed upon defence by looking at the thickness of the walls. The Church is named after Gregory the Great and as well as its history is also known for

a. A wall sculpture of the adoration of the Magi where the magi are Scots wearing kilts.

b. The resting place of 19th century social reformer Josephine Butler.

You can read more about the church here.
