Simonburn, Northumberland

Approximately 3 miles to the south of Wark is Simonburn. Nestling in the North Tyne Valley this is a quiet corner of Northumberland. It has an old Castle...well really just a bump in the ground now. The Castle dates back to 1136.

The other attraction in Simonburn is St Mungo's Church. Why would such a small village such a lovely big church? Well, turning to Geoffrey Purves's book on Northumberland Churches we can see that "until the early 19th century St Mungo's was one of the largest parishes in England...and covered about 260 square miles of the North Tyne Valley"

Although the church dates back to Saxon times the current building is 13th century.
