Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland

Born on 2nd October 1867, the son of Benjamin John Sutherland, he grew up in Newcastle and was educated at the Royal Grammar school ( left at age 16 in 1883). His family came originally from Thurso in the far north of Scotland.

Shipbuilding

He took a job as junior clerk at Lindsay,Gracie and Co. Shipowners,brokers and exporters.His ambition was to become a shipowner and, helped by his father, raised money to buy his first ship when he was 25 years of age. The Sutherland was 3,650 tons and cost £22700.Subsequently he purchased the Coventina and the Laughton an din 1896 the Sutherland steamship company was formed.

The end of WW1 brought much financial speculation

"the war ended on the foamy crest of inflation....shipping became a vast speculation"  Tynesider P 33.

He sold his fleet to the Western Counties Shipping Company which was formed to cash in on the bubble. Unfortunately it didn't survive the resulting crash and went into liquidation.

Newspaper proprietor.

He purchased the Newcastle Chronicle from the Cowen family in 1920 for approximtaley £800,000.Sold to Viscount Kemsley in 1925.

Public office

1910 . Elected to city council

1916- 1917 Sheriff of Newcastle.

1918 elected Lord Major of Newcastle.

 

Philanthropist.

Best known for his gifts to found Newcastle medical school and later the dental school.

Gift of Dunstanburgh castle to the nation.

Thurso house donated to the City. Now the mansion house.

Public honours

Appointed Knight Commander of the British Empire(KBE) in the 1920 civilian war honours and created aBaronetin the 1921 Birthday Honours

Died:29th March 1953.
