The Lead Dales.

The History of Lead Mining in the North East of England

By: Les Turnbull.

Coincidentally, just like Wool is my Bread this was also first published in 1975.

I had often thought of coal being King around this part of the world. However the reality was that Lead and other ores were mined across the North Pennines. This book of some 125 pages offers a good insight into the hard life on the hill slopes above the Tyne Valley.

The two images which stuck in my mind were the pack horses carrying the ore across to the coast ( before the railways arrived) and the comparison between this way of life and the coal mines. How with the lead ore there was always the chance of a bonanza claim and that however unlikely this was one way the miners as opposed to the mine owners could get very rich.
